Architect
His portfolio spans an expansive range — from residential complexes to the public realm of museums, libraries, theatres, government buildings and urban plazas, through to the private world of individual residences and galleries. He views people, architecture and the city as a single continuum, regarding the many phenomena that surround them as "environment," and situates architecture within its ceaseless currents of change — the flow of history, economy and culture; the flow of water, wind, heat and light; and the flow of topography, terrain and gravitational force. To receive these flows and give them form, to redirect their course and set new currents in motion — this, he believes, is the essence of architectural design, and the principle guiding his practice. His work has been recognised with the Architectural Institute of Japan Award, the Japan Institute of Architects Award, the Good Design Gold Award, the BCS Award, and the Public Architecture Award, among others.
