HANEGI

Setagaya

A quiet residential neighbourhood, right beside the park.

One stop from Shimokitazawa, or fifteen minutes on foot. Push past the noise and Hanegi turns remarkably quiet. Houses follow the rise and fall of the hill, and at the top of the slope Hanegi Park opens out across some eight hectares — few residential pockets in Setagaya sit this close to that much green.

The park sets the character of the neighbourhood. Its plum grove began with 55 trees in 1967 and now numbers around 670 across 60 varieties; from February into March the Setagaya Plum Festival draws people from well beyond the ward. Inside the park, Hanegi Play Park opened in 1979 as Japan’s first permanent adventure playground, and the sign reading “play freely, at your own risk” is still standing.

In 2020 Shimokita Senrogai changed the face of the area, built along the land freed up when the Odakyu line went underground. Bookshops and small restaurants now run the 1.7km from Setagaya-Daita to Shimokitazawa, and the hot-spring inn Yuen Bettei Daita opened by the station. Two stations on two lines put Shibuya nine minutes away and Shinjuku twelve — and the house you come back to is still quiet.

It is not a showy address. But if what you want is a walk through the park to the station in the morning and the same walk home in the evening, Hanegi is a very strong answer.
